Soft, airy, and lightly sweet, this easy white sandwich bread slices cleanly for perfect sandwiches or French toast.
Ingredients
Directions
This bread is one of my go‑to recipes because it’s simple, reliable, and endlessly versatile. The loaf bakes up light and airy, yet sturdy enough to slice cleanly for sandwiches or French toast. With just a handful of pantry staples — all‑purpose flour, yeast, milk, and honey — it delivers a soft crumb and a gentle sweetness that makes it perfect for everyday baking.
In a mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, stir together 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt.
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1/4 cup of melted butter, mixing until combined. Add 1 tablespoon instant yeast to the wet ingredients, making sure the liquid is lukewarm (under 105°F). If the mixture is too hot, it can kill the yeast and prevent the dough from rising.

Pour the wet ingredients into the flour. Mix on low speed until the dough begins to come together. Increase the speed to medium and knead with the dough hook for 5–7 minutes, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky. At first it will look shaggy, but keep mixing until it forms a cohesive ball. In the photos, I am doing everything by hand.

If kneading by hand, turn the dough out onto a clean work surface and knead for 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

Form the dough into a smooth ball. Lightly grease a large bowl with vegetable oil and place the dough inside. Lightly spray or brush the top of the dough with oil to prevent it from drying out. Cover the bowl and set it in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
Deflate the dough by gently pressing down on it to release the excess air.

Lightly grease a 9×5‑inch loaf pan with vegetable cooking spray. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into an 8×12‑inch rectangle. Starting with a short end, roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching the seams along the sides to seal.
Tuck the ends gently under the loaf and place it seam‑side down in the prepared pan. Loosely cover with plastic wrap sprayed with nonstick spray and let rise for 25–35 minutes, or until the dough rises just above the rim of the pan.
While the dough is rising in the pan, preheat the oven to 350°F. Once the loaf has finished its second rise, bake for 30–35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

Let the bread cool in the pan for a few minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Enjoy!
