Delicious & easy burger with caramelized onions, mushrooms, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and Swiss cheese on a toasted bun.
Ingredients
Directions
This Mushroom Onion Swiss Burger is one of my favorite burgers to make — soft, juicy, and loaded with rich, savory flavor. The caramelized onions and mushrooms melt right into the creamy Swiss, and the toasted buns add that irresistible crisp edge on the cut side that makes every bite feel extra satisfying. It’s simple, comforting, and the kind of burger you think about long after the plate is clean.
Form the hamburger into four quarter‑pound patties, making each patty slightly larger than the hamburger buns since they will shrink as they cook. Use a burger press or shape them by hand. Press a small indentation into the center of each patty to help prevent it from puffing up while cooking.

Slice the onion into rings and the mushrooms into slices. Add 2 tablespoons of salted butter to a preheated skillet, then add the onions and sauté until softened. Once the onions have cooked down, add the sliced mushrooms and continue sautéing until the mixture is caramelized.
Add the Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until fully combined. Remove the onions and mushrooms from the heat and transfer them to a bowl. There’s no need to wipe out the skillet before cooking the burgers.
In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once the butter has melted, place the patties in the skillet and cook them undisturbed for 5–6 minutes per side to allow a crust to form. Continue cooking until the burgers reach your desired level of doneness.
Just before the burgers are ready to come out of the skillet, add 2 slices of Swiss cheese to each patty and let it melt over the top.
In a separate skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium‑high heat. Place the buns cut‑side down in the pan and toast until golden brown. Assemble the burgers on the toasted buns, then top each with a generous spoonful of the caramelized onions and mushrooms.
Enjoy!
